Know the Signs of a Concussion

Did you know that 33% of people report to have experienced a concussion? The most common causes are falls, motor vehicle accidents and sports. The symptoms of a concussion, and the long-term impact can often be life-altering.  Do you know the signs and symptoms?  The following video by Dr. Mike Evans gives a great overview that is simple and easy to understand.  It provides parents and children with vital information about how concussions occur, the symptoms of a concussion, and some guidelines for recovery.

Remember, a concussion is a serious injury and requires treatment and rest to ensure the brain recovers properly, ensure you speak to your Family Doctor and consult an Occupational Therapist if you or your child has suffered a head injury.

Eat Your Omega’s

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to be beneficial for the health of your brain as they can help to boost your mood, improve memory and reduce cognitive decline.  Fish, especially salmon, is very high in omega-3’s, but if you are not a fish eater don’t worry, there are alternate sources.  Take a look at the following from Reader’s Digest to learn about some other sources of this brain boosting fatty acid.

One of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy brain is to protect it from injury.  Brain Injury is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide and in Canada, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is more common than breast cancer, spinal cord injury, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis (MS) combined.
