Dementia in the Workplace

Although dementia is most common in older adults, it can and does affect younger people.  The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada states that approximately 564,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia.  Of those affected, 16,000 are under the age of 65.  With an aging workforce in Canada, there is a greater possibility of dementia in the workplace which, without proper awareness, can lead to an unfamiliar situation for both employers and employees.  Take a look at the following article care of Workplace Strategies for Mental Health which provides information on awareness, recognition, risk management and supportive responses.

Practice Pedestrian Safety

In cities across Ontario pedestrian deaths and injuries are on the rise.  Many blame distracted drivers, but distracted pedestrians are also a problem.  Distractions from mobile devices including texting, emailing and music are often to blame.   It is up to both drivers and pedestrians to keep people safe.  Be a safe pedestrian and put down your phone when walking.  Pay attention to the traffic around you and only cross at lights and crosswalks when it is safe to do so.  Learn more about pedestrian safety tips in the following from the Ontario Medical Association.

Know the Signs of a Concussion

Did you know that 33% of people report to have experienced a concussion? The most common causes are falls, motor vehicle accidents and sports. The symptoms of a concussion, and the long-term impact can often be life-altering.  Do you know the signs and symptoms?  The following video by Dr. Mike Evans gives a great overview that is simple and easy to understand.  It provides parents and children with vital information about how concussions occur, the symptoms of a concussion, and some guidelines for recovery.

Remember, a concussion is a serious injury and requires treatment and rest to ensure the brain recovers properly, ensure you speak to your Family Doctor and consult an Occupational Therapist if you or your child has suffered a head injury.

Eat Your Omega’s

One of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy brain is to protect it from injury.  Brain Injury is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide and in Canada, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is more common than breast cancer, spinal cord injury, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis (MS) combined.
